How to Avoid 'Delhi Belly' (Traveler’s Diarrhea) in India

Indian Food
⚡ The Golden Rules

1. Drink only bottled water (Bisleri/Kinley/Aquafina) and check the seal.
2. Avoid raw salads, cut fruits, and ice in drinks at street stalls.
3. Eat at busy places (high turnover = fresh food).
4. Wash your hands or use sanitizer before every meal.
5. Consider taking a daily Probiotic to boost your gut immunity.

What is Delhi Belly?

"Delhi Belly" is just a nickname for Traveler's Diarrhea. It happens when your system is introduced to new bacteria (usually in water or food) that your gut isn't used to. It's not always "poisoning"—sometimes it's just "different."

Water: The Biggest Culprit

Never drink tap water in India. Not even for brushing your teeth if you have a sensitive stomach.

  • Bottled Water: Look for reputable brands like Bisleri, Aquafina, or Kinley. Always twist the cap yourself to break the seal.
  • RO Water: Many restaurants serve "RO Water" (Reverse Osmosis filtered). This is generally safe in good establishments, but if in doubt, ask for a sealed bottle.

Street Food: Safe vs. Unsafe

You shouldn't miss out on India's amazing street food scene out of fear. You just need to choose wisely.

✅ SAFE TO EAT

  • Hot, fresh-cooked food: Anything fried or boiled in front of you (like Samosas, Aloo Tikki, Chai) kills bacteria.
  • Peelable fruit: Bananas, oranges, mangoes (if you peel them yourself).

❌ AVOID

  • Water-based snacks: Gol Gappa or Pani Puri (unless using mineral water).
  • Cut fruit/salads: They may have been washed in tap water.
  • Cold chutneys: Green chutneys at street stalls sit out for hours.

Pack a Medical Kit

Bring Imodium (Loperamide) for emergencies (travel days) and Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS). If you get sick, hydration is more important than stopping the flow. In India, most pharmacies deliver via apps like Apollo or 1mg.

When to See a Doctor?

If symptoms persist for more than 48 hours, or if you have a high fever, blood in stool, or severe dehydration, visit a doctor. India has excellent private hospitals in major cities (Apollo, Max, Fortis).
