The "Hotel is Closed" Taxi Scam in Delhi: How to Avoid It

Secure Cabs
⚡ The Quick Summary

SCAM ALERT: If your taxi driver tells you your hotel is "closed," "burned down," "in a sealed area," or "full due to a festival" — HE IS LYING. He wants to take you to a fake "Government Tourist Office" (which is actually a private travel agency) to sell you an expensive new hotel or tour package. Do not believe him.

How the Scam Works

This is the most notorious scam in New Delhi, often targeting tourists arriving at the airport or railway station (NDLS).

  1. The Pick-Up: You get into a cab (sometimes even a prepaid one).
  2. The Story: About 10-15 minutes into the ride, the driver receives a fake "call" or acts surprised. He turns to you and says, "Madam/Sir, road is blocked. Protest going on. Hotel area sealed."
  3. The "Solution": He "helpfully" offers to take you to the "Official Government Tourist Office" (DTTDC) to sort it out.
  4. The Trap: You arrive at an office that looks official. A "manager" calls your hotel (fake call) and "confirms" it is cancelled. They then pressure you to book a ₹30,000 package to Jaipur or Agra immediately because "Delhi is unsafe tonight."

How to Avoid It (Action Plan)

1. Enable Roaming / Get a SIM

You need internet. Open Google Maps immediately. If the driver says a road is blocked, check the map. If the traffic confirms it's green/clear, call him out.

2. Call Your Hotel

If the driver claims the hotel is closed, say: "Okay, stop the car. I will call them myself." Use your own phone. Do not use the driver's phone (he has a friend's number saved as 'Hotel').

3. The "Police" Threat

If he refuses to go to your destination, stay calm and say: "Take me to the destination or take me to the Police Station." Dial 112 (India's emergency number) on your phone visibly.

4. Use Verified Apps

Avoid flagging random cabs on the street. Use Uber, BluSmart, or pre-book via Expatly. App-based drivers are tracked and verified, making them much less likely to pull this scam.

Reliable Transport from Delhi Airport

When arriving at IGI Airport (DEL), ignore anyone approaching you in the arrivals hall. Go to the Uber/Ola pickup zone or the Official Meru/Mega Cab counters. Or, for complete peace of mind, book an Expatly Electric SUV transfer in advance.

What is DTTDC?

The Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation (DTTDC) is the real government body. However, scammers set up shops with names like "Government Approved Tourist Information" which are fake. The real DTTDC does not have random offices in Connaught Place alleys selling expensive Kashmir tours to stranded tourists.
