Vantawng Falls, at approximately 229 metres in height, is the tallest waterfall in Mizoram and one of the most dramatic in all of Northeast India. The falls are fed by the Vantawng River, which plunges off a plateau edge in the Serchhip District, dropping in a single free-fall through dense subtropical rainforest before crashing into a large pool at the base. The name Vantawng translates roughly as "sky drop" in the Mizo language — entirely appropriate for a waterfall that appears to descend from the heavens above the forest canopy. The falls are most powerful during and immediately after the monsoon season (October–November) when the Vantawng River runs at full volume. During the dry season, the falls narrow but remain visually stunning — and the pool at the base becomes accessible for a refreshing swim. The approach to the falls follows a forested trail through Mizoram's characteristic subtropical jungle, alive with hornbills, langur monkeys, and the constant symphony of cicadas and birdsong. A well-maintained viewpoint platform provides the main viewing position, but adventurous visitors can descend to the pool base via a steep trail. The surrounding forest is part of the Dampa Tiger Reserve ecosystem and supports significant wildlife including clouded leopards and Hoolock gibbons. The falls are located near Thenzawl town, which is accessible from Aizawl by a day's drive along mountain roads. PERMIT REQUIRED: ILP for all non-Mizo Indians and foreign nationals.
View Mizoram's tallest waterfall (229m) plunging through dense rainforest
Swim in the emerald pool at the base (accessible November–May in dry season)
Walk the forested approach trail alive with hornbills and langur monkeys
Photograph the full height of the falls from the viewpoint platform
Experience the raw power of the full-volume post-monsoon falls (October–November)
Visit in October–November for maximum water volume — the falls are most impressive in the weeks after monsoon ends
December–March for swimming: the pool is clear and accessible once flood-season debris settles
Carry your own food and water — there are no stalls or shops near the falls
The descent to the pool base (steep trail, ~45 minutes) is worth doing if you're fit — the view from pool level is extraordinary
